Artificial Intelligence: A Debate
Posted by on
Movies about artificial intelligence are an interesting, often disconcerting sub genre of science fiction. While the 2013 Spike Jonze film Her is hardly the first word on the subject of our relationship to the growing realization of true artificial intelligence, it is perhaps one of the most significant commentaries on A.I. currently available. It suggested the potential of not only artificial intelligence, but it also offered one of the most provocative looks to date at how relationships with artificial intelligence beings could develop.
It is certainly a subject that is worth taking seriously in the present. There is no question that artificial intelligence as a concept is only going to continue to gain significant, even dizzying momentum. Everyone from Stephen Hawking, to Bill Gates, to Elon Musk is working to raise our awareness of AI as a larger idea. There are a variety of opinions on the subject, as you can imagine. There are also a variety of things that you are going to want to keep in mind.
One of the major things to remember about artificial intelligence is that it will develop at its own pace. It will not only be able to learn independently from us, but it will also have the ability to make its own decisions, based entirely on its own perceptions of the research it has done of its own accord. If that sounds complicated, it can be. Some are concerned that if artificial intelligence ever becomes a true reality, we will quickly come to regret it. These same people will likely remind you that humanity is not equipped to handle no longer being the most advanced species on the planet.
At the same time, there are potential benefits to artificial intelligence. It can present unique, profound solutions to some of the world’s most significant problems. Keeping in mind the movie Her, it is ultimately difficult to say how our relationship with artificial intelligence would actually evolve. To put it another way, it is ultimately difficult to say with 100% certainty that the relationship will be positive or negative.
The debate continues. At the same time, the developments and breakthroughs are continuing to explode across the landscape. It is important to remember that the path to a true example of artificial intelligence is likely to be a rocky one. There are just so many things that need to happen in that particular arena. For now, we can only continue to discuss.
