Every day, it seems like there are new developments being made in the world of artificial intelligence. While we are still a little ways off from something that reaches the levels of HAL 9000 in 2001 Space Odyssey or Skynet in the Terminator movies (thank goodness for that!), there is no question that the AI concept is becoming increasingly elaborate and extraordinary, as time goes on.
At the same time, films, television, books, and comics continue to give us a variety of opinions as to what the future holds for artificial intelligence. With movies in particular, there have been some amazing examples of artificial intelligence partners over the years.
There are tons of examples of AI in films to consider. If you want a quick overview of artificial intelligence in cinema, keep in mind the following 5 artificial intelligence partners in movies:
1.J.A.R.V.I.S. (Iron Man, Avengers): Batman has Alfred, and Tony Star has J.A.R.V.I.S. Given Tony’s brilliance, it just makes sense that he would create an artificial intelligence computer as intelligent as he is. J.A.R.V.I.S essentially runs Tony’s entire life, while also protecting him from danger. It would also seems like J.A.R.V.I.S is pretty good at trading barbs with Mr. Stark, which is no small feat.
2.HAL 9000 (2001 Space Odyssey): Although HAL is a computer, you could honestly make the case that he is by far the most compelling character in Arthur C. Clarke’s iconic series of science fiction novels. In the Stanley Kubrick film adaptation of 2001, HAL’s curiosity and programming make him an essential member of the crew, until HAL starts to think for himself.
3.Samantha (Her): There are some wonderful performances to be found in the film Her. Perhaps one of the best would be Scarlett Johansson as Samantha, a talking OS who quickly becomes the object of the deepest desires of protagonist Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix). The relationship between Theodore and Samantha is at times hilarious, as well as heartbreaking. There is even perhaps something unsettling to the evolution of their relationship, over the course of the film. However, in terms of complexity and intrigue, Samantha is one of the most interesting cinematic examples of artificial intelligence ever created.
4.AVA (Ex-Machina): One of the biggest science fiction hits of the decade, Ex-Machina depicts one of the most multi-layered, unsettling relationships to date between humanity and artificial intelligence. AVA is designed to be a dream woman come to life. However, as we soon discover, there is so much more to it than that.
5.TARS (Interstellar): There are actually three U.S. Marine Corp robots that are featured in the Christopher Nolan science fiction epic Interstellar. TARS is perhaps the most famous of the three, owing to the fact that he not only seems to have more personality, but also seems to be more useful for the crucial mission at hand.
